P. Gnana is a distinguished
painter and sculptor in Singapore, whose pieces revolve around
the depiction of a celestial cow, which is a contemporary representation
of an animal revered in old Indian theology. His cows are truly magnificent and
enormous mythical creatures, placed in a modern city environments. In a way,
these cows symbolize the lost spirituality floating over the busy urban lives
we live. Gnana’s work is characterized by experimentation, which has been one
of the main instruments in his creative journey throughout many years.
Arpan Bhowmik, born in 1977 in Kolkata, graduated from the Government College of Art and Craft, University of Calcutta in 2001. Known for his expertise in both acrylic and watercolours, Bhowmik’s largely monochromatic cityscapes have a splash of colour thrown in ever so often lending his art a surreal effect. Having lived in Kolkata all his life, the artist is deeply inspired by the city and pours his love for his hometown with effortless strokes on canvas. Bhowmik’s ‘A journey Through Kolkata’ series showcases the vintage theme of the heritage city.
Subramanian Gopalsamy is an artist who has traversed many
routes like his early pen and ink drawing infused with typical calligraphy,
intricately woven with myth and tradition. Mostly, artists either paint
on the canvas or create art out of paper, but sometimes, some artists beautifully
blend the paints with papers to create mesmerising art on canvas. Inspired by
the simplicity of children’s paintings, Subramanian Gopalswamy sketches a
basic and simple line drawing. Then, instead of using a variety of colours,
he uses various cut outs from different magazines to colour the said
sketches. He finally uses acrylics to give the finishing touches to his
paintings. Gopalswamy’s art is simple yet picturesque and is finely
detailed. The artist has won several awards and held many solo and group
shows in India and abroad. One look at Michelangelo's work at the
Sistine Chapel led him to become an artist. He graduated first class,
ranked first, from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kumbakonam in
1974. |
